Linkee-poo Wednesday

"Beirut death toll rises to at least 100 as explosion is blamed on 2,750-ton ammonium nitrate stash." That was a lot more than I initially thought, looking at the video. And it cooked off in a strange way.

"Seventy-five years ago Thursday, the U.S. became – and remains – the only country in the world to detonate a nuclear weapon against an enemy."

"SpaceX achieved a big win in their Starship spacecraft development program on Tuesday evening, flying the SN5 prototype of that future vehicle to a height of around 500 feet, propelled by a single Raptor engine. The test, which took place at SpaceX’s rocket development and testing facility in Boca Chica, Texas, marks the first time that a full-scale Starship prototype has left the ground."

"(NASA)'s car-sized Curiosity rover celebrates eight (Earth) years on the Red Planet today (Aug. 5), less than a week after the Perseverance rover took flight toward Mars."

And as if there wasn't enough to worry about… "The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a call to action to warn of a potential outbreak between the end of this summer and winter of a rare, but potentially lethal disease that affects young children, where seeking medical attention right away could make all the difference." AFM is back.

"Get set for 2020's mega-campaign against the flu amid the COVID-19 pandemic: immunization drives in the parking lots of churches and supermarkets, curbside inoculations outside doctors' offices, socially distanced vaccine appointments held indoors, with breaks in between for disinfecting."

"A Georgia second grader tested positive for Covid-19 after attending the first day of school, the school district told CNN." Ta-da!

How go the Trade Wars? "Senior U.S. and Chinese officials will review the implementation of their phase one trade deal and likely air mutual grievances in an increasingly tense relationship during an August 15 video conference, two people familiar with the plans said."

"Nearly 30 years ago, Hindu extremists armed with pickaxes tore down a 16th century mosque in the northern Indian town of Ayodhya, sparking riots that killed thousands of Muslims… Today, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi fulfilled a campaign promise to his Hindu nationalist base by laying the cornerstone of a grand Hindu shrine on that very same spot. The ceremony coincides with the first anniversary of India's revocation of special rights in Kashmir, its only Muslim-majority state." Racists gonna be racists.

"Families are suing TikTok in what has turned into a major legal action in federal court… Dozens of minors, through their parents, are alleging that the video-sharing app collects information about their facial characteristics, locations and close contacts, and quietly sends that data to servers in China." If you don't know what the product is, the product is you.

"The Republican and Democratic parties — from the presidential candidates on down — are taking polar opposite approaches to door-to-door canvassing this fall. The competing bets on the value of face-to-face campaigning during a pandemic has no modern precedent, making it a potential wild card in November, especially in close races." And it's a big gamble. Dear Democrats, you have to ask people for their votes.

"Congressman Roger Marshall fended off 10 challengers, including former Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, to win the Republican Senate primary in Kansas. He will now face state Senator Barbara Bollier, who won the Democratic contest on Tuesday, in the general election." Don't let the door hit you… you know what, somebody slam that door into Kobach's ass on his way out.

"President Donald Trump turned heads on Tuesday when he mispronounced the word 'Yosemite' at a White House event to sign a bipartisan conservation bill." Our stable genius president, everyone.

"After repeatedly seeking to discredit mail-in voting, President Donald Trump on Tuesday claimed Florida's election system is 'safe and secure' and encourages Floridians to vote by mail." Well, he's encouraging Florida republicans to vote by mail. "'So Florida's got a great Republican governor and it had a great Republican governor (before that) ... and over a long period of time they've been able to get the absentee ballots done extremely professionally. Florida's different from other states,' Trump said, before criticizing vote-by-mail efforts in Nevada and New York, states led by Democratic governors." The fix is in.
