Linkee-poo Friday

"Rocket Lab isn't just a launch provider anymore… The Photon spacecraft, named 'First Light,' rode to orbit atop Rocket Lab's 57-foot-tall (17 meters) Electron booster on Aug. 30, company representatives announced today (Sept. 3). The primary payload on that mission was the 220-lb. (100 kilograms) Sequoia, an Earth-observation satellite built by San Francisco-based company Capella Space." The article is a little unclear, but it basically sounds like Rocket Lab is using it's final stage vehicle as an actual space craft that could host other experiments/satellites.

"Less than one month ago, SpaceX blasted a full-scale prototype of its Starship vehicle to an altitude of 150 meters above South Texas before returning it safely to the ground. On Thursday, the company did it again with the latest version of the vehicle, dubbed Serial Number 6, or SN6."

"One of the most powerful solar observatories in the world has just completed a major upgrade. And now, the GREGOR solar telescope in Spain has taken some of the most high-resolution images of our Sun ever obtained in Europe."

"Rescue teams in Beirut continue to hunt through rubble on Friday after signs of life were detected 30 days after a massive explosion destroyed much of the city's downtown coastal area… A pulse signal is still being detected in the ruins in the Mar Mikhael area of the Lebanese capital. Rescuers traced what they believed to be a heartbeat signal to locations under the debris, but no survivors were found, members of the Lebanese civil defense told CNN."

"A professor of African and Latin American studies who portrayed herself as Black has now revealed she has been lying… Jessica A. Krug, an associate professor at George Washington University, has written extensively about Africa, Latin America, the diaspora and identity, all while claiming her own Black and Latina heritage. But in an article published on Medium.com on Thursday, Krug revealed the truth: She is White."

"A key forecasting model often cited by experts and used by the White House has revised its prediction of COVID-19 deaths in the U.S., now estimating a peak of 410,451 by Jan. 1."

"At least 7,000 health workers around the world have died as a result of contracting the coronavirus, according to analysis published by Amnesty International."

"Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said Thursday that he believes federal regulators will allow a coronavirus vaccine to be distributed this fall only if it’s based on science and 'hard data.'" Only if you get your way, Dr. Fauci. And that means only if you're still in government.

"The Centers for Disease Control and Dr. Anthony Fauci debunked an online conspiracy theory —Tweeted by President Donald Trump — claiming that the number of U.S. COVID-19 deaths has been exaggerated… The theory, shared on social media accounts and by followers of the baseless conspiracy group QAnon, was a misinterpretation of how COVID-19 deaths are categorized, said the federal health agency and Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a top White House coronavirus advisor."

"The National Institutes of Health has awarded a grant worth $7.5 million over five years to EcoHealth Alliance, a U.S.-based nonprofit that hunts emerging viruses. The award comes months after NIH revoked an earlier grant to EcoHealth, a move scientists widely decried as the politically motivated quashing of research vital to preventing the next coronavirus pandemic."

Not sure if I've linked to this before… "Starting in 1965, summer after summer, America's cities burned. There was civil unrest in more than 150 cities across the country. So in 1967, Lyndon Johnson appointed a commission to diagnose the root causes of the problem and to suggest solutions. What the so called 'Kerner Commission' returned with was hotly anticipated and shocking to many Americans. This week, how that report and the reaction to it continues to shape American life."

"The Wall Steet Journal reported earlier that Reinoehl was a person of interest in the killing of Aaron “Jay” Danielson, who was taking part in a massive pro-Trump caravan that began in Clackamas earlier in the day… In a conversation with freelance journalist Donovan Farley shared with VICE News, Reinoehl said he believed he and a friend were about to be stabbed, and that he acted in self defense. VICE News has not independently verified details of his story."

"A man suspected of shooting and killing a supporter of a right-wing group in Portland, Oregon, last week after a caravan of Donald Trump backers rode through downtown was killed Thursday as investigators moved in to arrest him, the U.S. Marshals Service confirmed." I wonder if they had body cams and if they were turned on.

"Washington, D.C., police released body camera footage Thursday of the fatal police shooting of an 18-year-old Black man, following protests outside a police station and Mayor Muriel Bowser's home… The footage was shared less than 24 hours after Deon Kay was shot and killed by a patrol officer from the Metropolitan Police Department's Seventh District in southeast Washington, D.C."

"The economy added around 1.4 million jobs last month, reflecting a slow return to labor market growth, according to data released on Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics." That would be just a little over the new unemployment claims made just last week. "'We have had three huge months of job gains, but so far have regained less than half of the losses in March and April,' said Dan North, senior economist at Euler Hermes North America. 'Job gains so far have probably been the easy ones to get, where a business opened back up and brought back in its employees.'"

"Here in Ohio, numbers show that (unemployment) claims continue to decrease, implying more people are going back to work… But those who haven’t yet are still having trouble navigating the state’s outdated system." You shouldn't have to rely on the beneficence of a news organization or a representative to get your unemployment benefits. What I think is funny is that the news organization doesn't entertain the possibility that people become discouraged while trying to the use the system and just give up. But let's blame "fraudulent claims" for the problem.

"The Kremlin said on Friday that it wanted dialogue with Germany over the case of opposition politician Alexei Navalny and that Russian doctors who treated him initially were much more transparent than the German doctors treating him now." How about no. Does no work for you?

"Germany is under pressure to abandon a giant gas pipeline from Russia after Putin's government was accused of poisoning Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny."

"U.N. human rights experts have told China a new security law for Hong Kong 'infringes on certain fundamental rights' and voiced concerns that it could be used to prosecute political activists in the former British colony." You say that like that wasn't the actual point of the law.

"President Donald Trump and his campaign on Tuesday accused the political commentators Matt Drudge and Joe Lockhart of spreading rumors that Trump had gone to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to treat a 'series of mini-strokes.'… The targeted attacks come after Trump had vaguely tweeted that an ambiguous 'they' were making the claim earlier in the day." Adds Drudge to the list of those on the outs. Not that I think Drudge or Fox News would report the truth even if they had a gun pointed to their heads, but just more confirmation that within autocracies eventually everyone is excluded.

"'From the point of view of New York City, this has been the worst president in history,' (NY Gov.) Cuomo said in a conference call with reporters. He said Mr. Trump 'has been actively trying to kill New York City ever since he's been elected.'"

"In a memorandum released Wednesday, Trump directed the White House Office of Management and Budget to issue guidance for federal agencies on curtailing funds to areas the memo calls "anarchist jurisdictions" within the next 30 days. The memo also directs Attorney General William Barr to publish on the Department of Justice website a list of jurisdictions that have 'permitted violence and the destruction of property.' Federal agencies will also receive guidance on reporting on federal funds they distribute to several Democrat-led cities." You know, totally not like an autocrat would do. Wait. Checks notes. No, that's exactly what dictators do.

"You could be forgiven for losing track of all the investigations into President Donald Trump’s business—there are just so many of them. They take a long time, they’re complex, and there’s no linear story structure. The latest salvo came from the New York State Attorney General’s Office, which is investigating whether Trump’s company improperly inflated the value of its assets to get tax benefits and loans. But how close are we to the truth? On Thursday’s episode of What Next, I checked in with David Fahrenthold, a Pulitzer Prize–winning investigative reporter at the Washington Post, to find out what we know and still don’t know about the Trump Organization and its finances. Our conversation has been condensed and edited for clarity."

"The Trump team has been studying Biden’s idiosyncrasies in debates and other venues and preparing tactics for Trump, according to interviews with a dozen campaign aides, White House officials and outside advisers. Some have noticed the way he says, “C’mon, man,” whenever he feels frustrated, and they’re trying to identify words or phrases that trigger him to “reboot,” as one person familiar with the planning described it. Essentially, Trump aides are looking for ways to trip up Biden in an effort to spur an incoherent or unsatisfactory response — bolstering a key Trump argument against Biden built around his age."

"A veterans group released a video on Wednesday slamming President Donald Trump for his lack of protection for American troops and his 'refusal to defend' America's national security, saying it will cost him military votes."

"When President Donald Trump canceled a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery near Paris in 2018, he blamed rain for the last-minute decision, saying that “the helicopter couldn’t fly” and that the Secret Service wouldn’t drive him there. Neither claim was true… Trump rejected the idea of the visit because he feared his hair would become disheveled in the rain, and because he did not believe it important to honor American war dead, according to four people with firsthand knowledge of the discussion that day. In a conversation with senior staff members on the morning of the scheduled visit, Trump said, 'Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.' In a separate conversation on the same trip, Trump referred to the more than 1,800 marines who lost their lives at Belleau Wood as 'suckers' for getting killed."

"The reporting (above) was confirmed by the Associated Press."

"Analysts with the Department of Homeland Security’s intelligence branch issued the warning on Thursday to federal and state law enforcement partners after finding with 'high confidence” that “Russian malign influence actors' have targeted the absentee voting process 'by spreading disinformation' since at least March." Waves to my Russian friends.
