Linkee-poo Thursday Oct 15

"The influential International Energy Agency global advisory group called for urgent and unprecedented action from governments worldwide to aggressively shift away from oil and gas, keeping the most devastating effects of climate change at bay." And it only comes (looks at watch) 2 decades late.

"Compressing simple molecular solids with hydrogen at extremely high pressures, University of Rochester engineers and physicists have, for the first time, created material that is superconducting at room temperature." Well, basically they substituted ultra-low temperatures with ultra-high pressure, so not that much of a deal. Because while the goal was states as "super conductivity at room temperature" the real goal is "super conductivity without special conditions."

"A three-person crew successfully reached the International Space Station on Wednesday aboard a Russian rocket after the fastest ever journey from Earth of just over three hours… The mission of the Soyuz space craft carrying two Russian cosmonauts and one NASA astronaut was of immense importance to Russia's space agency Roscosmos, coming as the SpaceX programme relaunches crewed spaceflight from the United States and ignites fresh talk of a space race between the two countries."

"During this pandemic, people in the United States are dying at rates unparalleled elsewhere in the world… A new report in the Journal of the American Medical Association finds that in the past five months, per capita deaths in the U.S., both from COVID-19 and other causes, have been far greater than in 18 other high-income countries." We're number 1. Best healthcare system in the world, eh kid.

"'The mental health component of COVID is starting to come like a tsunami,' says Dr. Jennifer Love, a California-based psychiatrist and co-author of an upcoming book on how to heal from chronic stress."

"Johnson & Johnson paused all clinical trials of its experimental COVID-19 vaccine after a study participant became sick with an 'unexplained illness.'"

"A Wisconsin judge has put a temporary hold on an order by Gov. Tony Evers' administration that limits the capacity of bars, restaurants and indoor spaces amid record numbers of coronavirus cases in the state… The state health department's emergency order capped indoor public gatherings to no more than 25% of the total occupancy limits for the room or building, with exceptions for schools, child care, health care and long-term care facilities." Your money or your life is now your money and your life.

"The U.K. government has imposed tougher coronavirus restrictions on London in an attempt to curb the rapid spread of the disease… The U.K.’s capital city will move to a so-called 'high' alert level from midnight on Friday, up from the current 'medium' alert level… It means millions of people in Europe’s richest city will soon be unable to meet with anybody outside their household or support bubble in any indoor setting, whether at home or in public."

"New infections have surged across Europe over recent weeks as the fall kicks in, prompting authorities to start re-imposing restrictions relaxed over the summer. The Czech Republic, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, France and Britain are among the countries causing particular concern."

"First lady Melania Trump posted a personal essay on the White House website detailing her experience battling Covid-19, which she tested positive for approximately two weeks ago. The first lady also revealed that her son, Barron Trump, 14, who the White House publicly confirmed at the time had tested negative, eventually tested positive for the virus, a diagnosis the White House did not share." Retconning in real time.

"New eyewitness accounts: Feds didn’t identify themselves before firing on Portland antifa shooting suspect."

"The news raced through the encrypted chats of leaders in the far-right militia movement: The Feds got Barry Croft… Croft, one of 13 men charged Thursday in connection with a domestic terrorism plot to kidnap Michigan Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, was a visible figure on the message boards and Facebook pages of the so-called Patriot Movement. NPR interviews with associates who know him from that world portray a power-hungry figure whose angling for stature was unsettling at times. Now that Croft is in custody and his connections under scrutiny, their fear is: Who's next?" Even the lone wolves don't want him anymore, but are afraid if it can happen to him it might happen to them.

"American workers continued to hit the unemployment line in large numbers last week, with 898,000 new claims filed for jobless benefits… The total for the week ended Oct. 10 was the highest number since Aug. 22 and another sign that the labor market continues to struggle to get back to its pre-coronavirus pandemic mark as cases rise and worries increase over a renewed wave in the fall and winter. The number represented a gain of 53,000 from the previous week’s upwardly revised total of 845,000." Funny how previous weeks' number keep getting revised upwards.

"Fraudulent claims for unemployment benefits have been a problem for a long time, and states have set up systems to try to prevent such fraud. But lost in that effort is arguably a bigger problem: Some of those systems have hurt millions of innocent people, keeping the benefits they deserve in limbo." You say that like you don't think that was part of the plan.

"The California Supreme Court has ordered a second look at Scott Peterson's conviction for killing his pregnant wife and unborn son, less than two months after it overturned his death penalty. The court sent the case back to San Mateo County Superior Court to determine whether Peterson should receive a new trial, the Los Angeles Times reported." Oh look, a technicality.

"A memo based on information from senior White House officials in early 2020 conveyed to investors that the coronavirus pandemic was likely to be far more dire than President Trump’s public predictions, leading to stock sell-offs, The New York Times reported… On Feb. 24, the same day the president tweeted the virus was 'very much under control,' White House economic staff met with board members of the conservative Hoover Institution, many of them GOP donors, and said the White House could not yet predict the virus’s effect on the economy, the Times reported." The swamp in all its glory.

"A financial scandal swirling around the Vatican has taken a new twist with the arrest of a woman linked to a cardinal fired by Pope Francis." The Vatican is also a city state, with all the troubles that come with that.

"Antiabortion groups told Insider they took no issue with the fact that one of President Donald Trump's COVID-19 treatments — which he is now vowing to make available to all Americans — was tested using cells that originally came from an abortion… It is a research practice Trump has severely restricted during his presidency and one pro-life groups have vehemently opposed." The religious right will twist themselves in ways no pretzel maker could ever dream of to make any points align that they need aligned. Because it's not about religion or morality, it's about ruling.

"With the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the president is hoping to fill the seat with a more ideologically conservative justice. And evangelical Christians, who've become a powerful conservative voting bloc, have been waiting for this moment. But how and when did this religious group become so intertwined with today's political issues, especially abortion? In this episode (of Throughline), what it means to be an evangelical today and how that has changed over time."

"White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany has said Twitter 'had me at gunpoint' after allegedly temporarily locking her out of her personal account… Ms McEnany says she lost access to her Twitter account on Wednesday because she shared a story published by the New York Post, which claims that Joe Biden's son, Hunter, was being paid by Ukrainian energy company Burisma Holdings in order to obtain access toJoe Biden for political reasons." If I were a mean person I would say we should demonstrate by example of how having your twitter account locked is not like having a gun pointed to your head. And, in truth, it's not like we didn't see this would happen at some point including the predictable response. The NY Post story is Russian disinformation. Twitter is correct in suspending her account for retweeting it as "real."

"'I recognize our Democratic friends wish there was a Democratic majority in the Senate. But the voters decided otherwise,' Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said. 'This committee moving forward is consistent with over 200 years of history and precedent.'" With, you know, 2009 to 2016 excluded. At least they're admitting out loud that this is only about politics.

"President Donald Trump is increasingly finding success in his strategy to restrict voting by mail — using lawsuits to stop late-arriving ballots from being counted in swing states… After failing to stop any states from automatically mailing ballots to all registered voters, Republican attorneys have starting to make inroads on a different issue — limiting when any ballots can be counted." Because the conservative game, having lost a few others, is to just not count legitimate ballots.

"Many Texans who were hoping to vote by mail during this election are instead having to vote in-person… So far, about a million Texans have cast a ballot during the state's extended early voting period, which started Tuesday." The early voting numbers for this election are insane.
