The day job has been insane lately. Sorry for the sporadic output. And speaking of insanity…
"A draft opinion circulated among Supreme Court justices suggests that earlier this year a majority of them had thrown support behind overturning the 1973 case Roe v. Wade that legalized abortion nationwide, according to a report published Monday night in Politico. It's unclear if the draft represents the court's final word on the matter."
I really hope politico vetted this leak. Because it’s going to be a crazy few weeks, and that crazy will be determined by the veracity of the report. As a for instance, Alito is not the “sanest” of justices and has often written drafts of dissents in the form of a majority opinion (changed before publication). This draft is supposedly from February, before their final votes. Given the firestorm and social havoc that is about to be released (on both sides of abortion) this has a (admittedly small) chance of purposeful disinformation (even if the draft is really Alito’s work, releasing it now could unleash another Summer of Protests and the US is about to be very distracted from world events for about 6 months). I expect civil unrest until the election. And there are several entities that would benefit from that.
I also expect many people (ie politicians) to “clarify” their positions as “not this extreme” in an attempt to avoid blowback. Don't let them get away with it.
Conservative legislatures will begin a race towards total bans. Some liberal states will declare themselves “sanctuaries” and the fights over citizen reporting/lawsuits and prohibiting interstate travel for abortion/trans care are about to catch fire.
And I've already seen many takes on the, "I was told to vote every election to avoid this, and I did, and it still happened…" story. If you don't understand what the difference is that this is happening with Biden in the White House instead of Trump, I'm sorry you're too stupid to get much of what's about to go down. Or it's a direct attempt to depress voter turn out (the "I used to be a Democrat" players out in force).
