"The shared results will provide the first systematic baseline of winter conditions on the Great Lakes, giving important clues about how climate is affecting lake ecosystems as a whole."
"Remains of Europe's largest ever land-based dinosaur have been discovered on the Isle of Wight, scientists say… Palaeontologists at the University of Southampton identified the remains of the predator, which measured more than 32ft (10m) long and lived about 125 million years ago."
"The Venus Cloud Discontinuity is a relatively new discovery, photographed by Japan's Venus orbiter Akatsuki in 2016 and first spotted by JAXA scientist Javier Peralta. The massive structure cuts vertically across Venus's equator, stretching almost 5000 miles from end to end, and circles the planet faster than 200 mph, making one lap every ~5 Earth days."
"For the past four months, Perseverance has had an unexpected traveling companion. Back on sol 341… a rock found its way into the rover's front left wheel, and since hitching a ride, it's been transported more than 5.3 miles (8.5 km). This rock isn't doing any damage to the wheel, but throughout its… journey, it has clung on and made periodic appearances in our left Hazcam images."
"One of the 18 golden segments of the James Webb Space Telescope's giant mirror was hit by a micrometeoroid in May, according to an update from NASA. But don't worry -- the space observatory is still on track to share its first high-resolution, full-color images on July 12."
"Good news for sea turtles: President Biden announced on Monday that he hopes to designate the aquatic Hudson Canyon as a national marine sanctuary… About 100 miles southeast of New York City, Hudson Canyon is the largest underwater canyon in the U.S. portion of the Atlantic Ocean. It's also a biodiversity hotspot: home to sensitive species including sperm whales, cold-water coral and, yes, sea turtles."
"World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus cautioned Wednesday that the window to contain the global monkeypox outbreak may be narrowing… 'The risk of monkeypox becoming established in non-endemic countries is real,' he said at a briefing in Geneva… 'We would have to really screw things up not to be able to contain this,' (Eric Toner, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security) added." Funny you should mention that, Eric.
"Results demonstrated that SARS-CoV-2 exceeded ( influenza A virus) in its capacity to cause permanent injury to the lung and kidney and uniquely impacted the olfactory bulb (OB) and epithelium (OE). Despite a lack of detectable infectious virus, the OB and OE demonstrated myeloid and T cell activation, proinflammatory cytokine production, and an interferon response that correlated with behavioral changes extending a month post viral clearance." Oops.
"To understand the differences between food culture and hospitality around the globe, we spoke to anthropologists and food researchers."
"In the U.S., a small box of Kleenex now has 60 tissues; a few months ago, it had 65. Chobani Flips yogurts have shrunk from 5.3 ounces to 4.5 ounces. In the U.K., Nestle slimmed down its Nescafe Azera Americano coffee tins from 100 grams to 90 grams. In India, a bar of Vim dish soap has shrunk from 155 grams to 135 grams."
"Initial jobless claims spiked to their highest level since mid-January last week despite signs of an otherwise strong employment picture, the Labor Department reported Thursday… First-time filings for the week ended June 4 totaled 229,000, an increase of 27,000 from the upwardly revised level in the prior period and well ahead of the 210,000 Dow Jones estimate. The period covered includes the Memorial Day holiday; seasonal adjustments normally would lead to a higher number."
"The European Central Bank on Thursday confirmed its intention to hike interest rates at the policy meeting next month and downgraded its growth forecasts… Following the latest monetary policy meeting, the Governing Council announced it intends to raise key interest rates by 25 basis points at the July meeting."
"German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has condemned Wednesday's attack on a busy Berlin street that left one person dead and 31 injured as a 'cruel rampage'… Mr Scholz added that the attack, which was carried out by a 29-year-old man, had left him 'deeply saddened'."
"Every day, new information surfaces about how law enforcement responded to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, that left 19 students and two teachers dead… Critics have pointed out failures at nearly every step of that response: the school's resource officer drove by the shooter as he crouched between cars; police waited more than an hour to head into the classroom while the gunman was inside; and the chief of school police showed up without his radio and stopped treating the incident as an active shooter situation."
"A young student who survived the mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, was among of group of witnesses who testified before House lawmakers at a hearing on gun violence, recalling how she smeared the blood of a classmate on herself to appear as if she were dead." And the continual question, will this time be different?
"On Thursday, the outfit announced a new campaign directed at Fox's website and its popular YouTube channel calling on the public to pressure online ad exchanges to stop doing business with Fox. It comes just as the House committee investigating the Capitol riots kicks off a series of hearings focused on violence that unfolded on Jan. 6." The real problem here is that Fox News, the parent company, receives much of it's funding from cable tv subscriptions. And until that is decoupled (by ala cart type subscriptions, or placing Fox News on a premium tier by itself) all you can do is affect how many shrimp are on their meeting shrimp cocktails. They're doing good work, but if you really want to hurt Fox, go after the cable TV companies. The biggest strike against ONAN was AT&T dropping them from the lineup. So I wish them all the success. Maybe they will be able to affect change. But ads aren't where Fox News makes it's money.
"FBI agents arrested (Michigan) Republican gubernatorial candidate Ryan Kelley on misdemeanor charges related to the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol… The arrest and search unfolding at Kelley's home in Allendale add more uncertainty to a chaotic race for governor that has seen several Republican candidates blocked from the ballot for submitting fraudulent nominating petition signatures."
"Haley is putting her political muscle behind South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace, a freshman congresswoman who blamed Trump for the deadly Jan. 6 Capitol riot — and who is now facing a Trump-endorsed opponent, Katie Arrington, in next week’s Republican primary. Haley, a former South Carolina governor, has appeared in Mace’s TV ads, headlined a fundraiser that raised six figures, and is expected to close out the race by holding several events with the congresswoman."
"The Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol played out for the world to see, but the House committee investigating the attack believes a more chilling story has yet to be told -- about the president and the people whose actions put American democracy at risk."
"Next week is the 50th anniversary of the break-in at Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington, an event that would bring down a U.S. president. The reporters at the heart of uncovering the Watergate scandal have reissued their book 'All the President's Men' with a new forward drawing parallels to former President Trump. Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein join Judy Woodruff to discuss." And then Carl Bernstein drops the hammer, "But then Trump went further. He is the first seditious president in our history. How did that happen? He decided he would not abide by the election, the duly constituted, free election of Joe Biden as the president of the United States, and staged a coup to keep Biden from taking office."
