Linkee-poo Thursday

"At least six people were injured during a shooting at a Southern California high school Thursday morning, authorities said."

"A $25,000 reward is being offered by the Maine Mineral and Gem Museum for part of a meteorite that was seen streaking past St. Louis Monday night. The prize goes to the person to bring in the first piece of the meteorite that weighs at least one-kilogram. That is just over two pounds of space rock." More than likely such a remnant doesn't exist.

"The climate crisis is already hurting our health and it could burden generations to come with lifelong health problems, a new report finds. It could challenge already overwhelmed health systems and undermine much of the medical progress that has been made in the last century." As I stated in a twitter conversation, right now I believe we're negotiating what disaster we are facing (not to avoid a disaster). My fear is we're also negotiating the timing of our extinction as a best case scenario at this time.

"The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a new report Wednesday warning that superbugs that resist antibiotics have killed nearly twice as many people as previously thought." There is some hope that CRISPR Cast 13 might help fight these diseases, but that technology is a long way off. Also note this patient was only "cured" with a fecal transplant.

"Over the past decade, the rate of new lung cancer cases diagnosed in the United States has dropped 19% and the five-year survival rate has climbed 26%, according to a new report… Yet lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death nationwide -- and your chances of surviving lung cancer can vary drastically depending on where you live."

"With Missouri potentially on the verge of becoming the only state without a clinic that performs abortions, Democrats in Congress are holding a hearing Thursday to look into the regulation of clinics by state officials."

"But there are also a lot of people who get a very familiar pit in their stomach when the holidays roll around. Holidays can mean exhaustion, confronting familial trauma, managing your uncle's opinions and all kinds of overload." Family of choice is an acceptable alternative.

"Fed to Congress: It may soon be your turn to save the economy, so get your finances in better shape." Well that should scare the crap out of you.

"Germany has narrowly avoided a technical recession, after the latest figures showed the country’s economy grew by 0.1% in the third quarter." Although this is the equivalent of getting a "B" on the comprehensive mid-terms which brings you out of probation and gives you hope you won't totally fail the class. Note the German central bank is already offering negative interest on their loans.

Why Black Site Torture centers were a Bad Idea™ (besides being against international law and a repudiation of who we are as Americans). "If you travel to Guantánamo, interview attorneys for its prisoners, read its military court transcripts, and review unclassified government documents, this becomes clear: Torture is a major reason there has still been no trial — and may never be one — for alleged Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and other Guantánamo prisoners." Fuck John Yoo. And yes, we should prosecute those who gave the orders, those who carried out those orders, and those who were brought in to support the decisions to give those orders. And we should reform the CIA like we did after the fuckups of the 70s and 80s.

How's the president's North Korea policy going? "North Korea’s supreme decision-making body lashed out Wednesday at planned U.S.-South Korean military drills and warned that the United States will face a 'bigger threat and harsh suffering' if it ignores North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s end-of-year deadline to salvage nuclear talks."

"The threat of violence hung over Hong Kong Thursday evening as thousands of student protesters prepared to face off with riot police, amid a continued occupation of several of the city's most prestigious universities."

"Reuters spoke to students at Hong Kong universities where campuses have become blazing battlegrounds as anti-government, pro-democracy protesters clash with police."

"Several prominent Democrats have called for White House senior adviser Stephen Miller to resign following the release of emails in which he purportedly linked to white nationalist websites." Not "purportedly", he links to white nationalist websites and cites their "race war" literature.

"President Trump’s concerns about corruption in Ukraine began, in part, with a series of articles in a publication called The Hill. On this week’s On the Media, a close-up on the columnist whose dubious tales may lead to an impeachment. Plus, the black nationalist origins of Justice Clarence Thomas’s legal thinking." Highly recommended, especially for the first story about The Hill's (full disclosure, I like to articles from The Hill, but I've been rethinking that) and "John Solomon's role in the impeachment saga."

"A U.S. appeals court opened the door for Congress to gain access to eight years of President Trump's tax records, setting the stage for a likely review by the U.S. Supreme Court… The full U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit declined to re-visit an earlier ruling by a three-judge panel that allowed Congress to subpoena the president's tax records."

"President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey has said he returned a letter sent to him last month by President Trump that had implored him not to be a 'tough guy' or a 'fool' as he embarked on an offensive in northern Syria." Returning a letter is diplomatic speech for, "fuck you."

"A suspected American national and Islamic State group fighter who has been stranded in heavily militarized no-man's land between Turkey and Greece will be repatriated to the United States, Turkey’s state-run news agency said Thursday."

"Much of what was said by acting U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine William Taylor and George Kent, the State Department's top official on Ukraine policy, was previously known from their lengthy depositions released last week… But there were some new things — and several moments that stood out. Here are seven…" Right now there have been so many shoes dropping we should open a store.

"He also said that after the call, the staffer asked Sondland what Trump thought about Ukraine. Sondland apparently told the staffer that Trump 'cares more about the investigations' of Joe Biden."

Meanwhile, on Bullshit Mountain… "Here's how I would sum up everything I heard from Fox's prime time hosts: Wednesday's hearing was a bust. It was all just hearsay. It was a 'disaster' for the Democrats and a 'great day' for the Republicans. Impeachment is 'stupid.' Impeachment is 'fake.' There's nothing impeachable here. There's no reason to hold hearings. This inquiry needs to stop right now."
