"An arctic blast could shatter more than 300 records across the U.S. as it brings freezing temperatures to nearly 222 million Americans. The dangerous weather on Monday caused accidents and travel delays in the Midwest." And just as a reminder, these incursions of the polar vortex are because the jet stream has been weakened by global warming, so it's not able to keep the vortex above the Arctic Circle.
"Scorched by days of unrelenting wildfires, parts of southeast Australia are facing 'catastrophic fire danger.' On Monday, officials declared a state of emergency for all of New South Wales, the country's most populous state."
"Former President Jimmy Carter was hospitalized on Monday for a procedure to relieve pressure on his brain, caused by bleeding due to his recent falls, a spokesperson said." Quick and safe healing, Mr. President.
Something new has been added. "But in new experiments by physicists at MIT and elsewhere, the opposite happens: When a pattern called a charge density wave in a certain material is hit with a fast laser pulse, a whole new charge density wave is created—a highly ordered state, instead of the expected disorder. The surprising finding could help to reveal unseen properties in materials of all kinds."
"The silver-backed chevrotain — a mysterious animal that's the size of a rabbit but looks like a silver-splashed deer — has been photographed in the wild for the first time. The chevrotain is the world's smallest hoofed mammal, or ungulate."
Not all carbs are the same (neither are fats or proteins). "Just because two foods have the same number of calories doesn't mean they're equal health-wise. 'We've known for decades, if not a century, that different foods affect the body differently, apart from their calorie content,' says David Ludwig, a professor of nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the founder of a weight loss center at Boston Children's Hospital."
"U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday he will be meeting with vaping industry representatives as his administration considers tightening e-cigarette regulations amid a nationwide outbreak of vaping-related injuries and deaths." I guess they haven't booked enough rooms in Trump hotels.
"Water and wildlife in the nation's public forests are slowly being poisoned by insecticides and other chemicals used in illegal marijuana operations, say forest police and researchers. They warn that the potential environmental damage could last generations."
How goes Brexit? "The U.K. government’s decision to delay the publication of a report on alleged Russian interference in British politics has been slammed as 'inexplicable and shameful' by former U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton." The report's release has been delayed until after Dec 12, their next election. Waves to our Russian friends.
How go the Trade Wars. "European stocks edged higher on Tuesday ahead of a critical speech on China trade relations from President Donald Trump, supported by generally well-received earnings." Cue Ray Charles' "Here we go-o-o again."
"U.S. stock index futures were slightly higher on Tuesday as investors awaited a speech from President Donald Trump on trade and economic policy." I'll take her back again, one more time.
Meanwhile, "The result is a power vacuum: it's not clear who is in charge of Bolivia, and how a successor to Morales will be chosen."
"More than seven decades after the fall of fascism in its country of birth, Italy is in the grip of an intense debate about anti-Semitism, racism and hate speech… The national psychodrama was unwittingly triggered by an 89-year-old Jewish grandmother and Holocaust survivor who has been put under police escort following threats from members of Italy's ultra-right." Fucking Nazis.
"Turkey has deported a US national who is a member of ISIL, according to a Turkish official, as Ankara said it started repatriating captured fighters belonging to the armed group." Turkey really hasn't been coordinating these releases, but instead has been shipping people out and dumping them.
"At least eight former White House, presidential transition and campaign officials for President Donald Trump were hired as outside contractors to the federal health department at the cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars per year, according to documents newly obtained by POLITICO." Wow, that's some real deep swamp corruption, even for this administration.
"Roger Stone asked for Jared Kushner’s contact information in order to 'debrief' the president’s son-in-law about hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee." He asked for the information in June, Wikileaks released the emails on July 22.
"More Americans feel the Democrats have done a bad job handling the inquiry (52%) than a good job (48%.) And more feel President Trump has done a bad job handling it (56%) than feel he has handled it well (43%.)" As with most early polling, people really aren't paying attention yet.
"An Alabama man charged with criminal mischief in the slashing of a towering 'Baby Trump' balloon has defended his actions, saying it was a matter of good versus evil." Triggered much, Snowflake?
"On Twitter, Trump suggested that House Intelligence committee chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) released doctored transcripts of impeachment depositions conducted behind closed doors — an explosive claim belied by the fact that not a single Republican or witness who has been in the room for them has said anything of the sort." The president lies the way fish swim.
"Laura Cooper, the top Pentagon official overseeing U.S. policy regarding Ukraine, told House impeachment investigators last month that President Donald Trump directed the relevant agencies to freeze aid to Ukraine over the summer, according to a transcript of her testimony released Monday." So, there were questions if the president even had the power to make this hold. "At the next meeting with national security personnel, she said she told attendees 'there were two legally available mechanisms should the President want to stop assistance' — a presidential rescission notice to Congress or for the Defense Department to do 'a reprogramming action.'" Neither happened. So with the corrupt and possible illegal attempt to abuse his office, the president also broke the law with how he withheld Ukrainian assistance. Also, the Ukrainians knew about the hold, which negates one of the president's defenses (that there could be no pressure because the Ukrainians didn't know about the hold).
"Public impeachment hearings begin Wednesday, and the first round of witnesses includes three career public servants who have testified behind closed doors that President Trump did link military aid and a White House meeting for Ukraine with a promise to investigate one of the president's domestic political opponents."
"President Donald Trump says he’ll be releasing the transcript of his April telephone conversation with Ukraine’s new leader 'before week’s end!'" You may remember that the cause of the impeachment is his July 25 phone call.
