Linkee-poo Tuesday

"A piece of 50,000-year-old string - the oldest yet discovered - found in a cave in France has cast further doubt on the idea that Neanderthals were cognitively inferior to modern humans." Of course they weren't cognitively inferior. But, there's no evidence they could play Cat's Cradle, so we've still got them there.

"A mammoth star explosion known as SN2016aps, which occurred in a galaxy about 3.6 billion light-years from Earth, is the brightest supernova ever seen, a new study reports."

"While there have yet to be robust studies on the link between coronavirus and smell, doctors have reported anecdotally that losing the ability to smell may be among the virus's symptoms -- but how widespread that is, and how long it might last, is unclear."

"The coronavirus outbreak has fueled attempts to ban abortions in some states, but providers where the procedure remains available report increased demand, often from women distraught over economic stress and health concerns linked to the pandemic."

"Theresa’s daughter is currently living with her ex-husband, Eric Greene, who was granted temporary sole custody of their daughter on April 9 after arguing in court that Theresa is exposing the child to COVID-19 after treating patients." Never let a crisis go to waste, otherwise known as assholes will be even more assholey when they think they can get away with it.

Okay, yes, it's The Sun, but I can't find another good source on this. "A study testing the anti-malarial drug chloroquine for Covid-19 that was backed by Donald Trump has been stopped after some patients developed heart complications and 11 died… The trial, carried out in Brazil, saw some coronavirus patients who took a higher dose of the drug develop irregular heart rates." And this is why you do drug trials.

Uh oh, someone was telling the truth. "Florida's Surgeon General Scott A. Rivkees was removed from state Gov. Ron DeSantis' cabinet coronavirus meeting today moments after stating that social distancing measures would need to continue until the creation of a vaccine. Video captured Rivkees' comment and his subsequent removal by DeSantis' Communications Director, Helen Aguirre Ferré." Can't have that now, can we? Look, as the mayor of Amity noted so long ago, the beaches must be open for July 4th.

"In a Rose Garden address, flanked by leaders from giant retailers and medical testing companies, (Trump) promised a mobilization of public and private resources to attack the coronavirus… But few of the promises made that day have come to pass."

"The 10 U.S. states coordinating plans separately from the White House to reopen businesses shut by the coronavirus are responsible for an outsized proportion of the U.S. economy… Collectively the ten states generated 38.3% of the total U.S. economic output in the fourth quarter of 2019, highlighting how much of the U.S. economy depends on its most populous states." Just a hint, it's too soon.

"While straining to keep citizens safe in the Dutch capital, municipality officials and the British economist Kate Raworth from Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute have also been plotting how the city will rebuild in a post-Covid-19 world… The conclusion? Out with the global attachment to economic growth and laws of supply and demand, and in with the so-called doughnut model devised by Raworth as a guide to what it means for countries, cities and people to thrive in balance with the planet." Don't expect that here in the US.

"'It is very likely that this year the global economy will experience its worst recession since the Great Depression, surpassing that seen during the global financial crisis a decade ago,' Gita Gopinath, the IMF’s chief economist, said in the latest World Economic Outlook report." That's gonna leave a mark.

"JPMorgan Chase on Tuesday posted first-quarter profit that was well below analysts’ expectations, although the bank’s revenue held up amid the coronavirus pandemic… The earnings drop was caused by a massive $6.8 billion addition to the bank’s credit reserves. The move signals that management expects a surge in defaults across the company’s lending businesses…" Uh, yep.

"Requests for (mortgage) forbearance jumped 78% for the week ended April 5 compared with the previous week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. The number of borrowers now in forbearance topped 2 million; the share of total loans in servicing portfolios in forbearance rose from 2.73% to 3.74% of total bank and nonbank servicing portfolios."

"But securing relief now could come back to haunt you later. Your bank still expects payment at some point and it may even require a lump sum at the break's end." Check those details.

Heinous fuckery. "Since early April, law firms have hosted Webinars and sent out alerts, and accounting firms have reached out to clients, all with the goal of explaining how they might be able to tap into the Paycheck Protection Program… Some hedge funds already have applied, filling out forms to show they have fewer than 500 employees and certifying the 'current economic uncertainty makes this loan request necessary to support the ongoing operations.'" I've never seen people so vociferously volunteer to be the first assholes against the wall.

"A nationwide lockdown imposed across India almost two weeks ago to stop the spread of the coronavirus – the largest lockdown of its kind attempted anywhere – has led to widespread chaos and suffering, especially among the country’s 300 million poor. Yet in Delhi, the world’s most polluted city, it has also resulted in some of the freshest air the capital has seen in decades." I doubt it'll actually change anything.

"North Korea launched what were believed to be multiple short-range cruise missiles into the sea between the Korean peninsula and Japan on Tuesday, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said, the latest in a series of weapons’ tests by the reclusive state."

"President Donald Trump lashed out at criticism of his handling of the coronavirus crisis during a grievance-fueled appearance from the White House that featured a propaganda-like video he said was produced by his aides… 'When somebody is president of the United States, your authority is total,' he said. He later added he would issue reports backing up his claim, which legal experts say isn't supported by the Constitution." Can't wait to see those. I didn't see it, but it sounds like that presser was a hellofa ride. No kings or landlords.

"On the one month anniversary of President Donald Trump proclaiming 'I don’t take responsibility at all' for problems with the government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the president on Monday melted down on national TV in one of his more memorable scenes during the daily White House coronavirus press briefing. He went on to claim his 'authority is total' as president."
