Yesterday was Mary Robinette Kowels birthday, and she has a gift for you. And that gift is process. "What I really have for you is how I developed the story."
"You will fail more than you succeed. You will remember the failures more often than the successes." Kameron Hurley on being a writer.
"A giant array of solar panels near the famed sandstone buttes of Monument Valley has begun producing electricity for the Navajo Nation at a time when the tribe is bracing for the loss of hundreds of jobs from the impending closure of a nearby coal-fired power plant… The Kayenta Solar Facility is the first utility-scale solar project on the Navajo Nation, producing enough electricity to power about 13,000 Navajo homes." (Grokked from Vincent O'Connor)
"Isaac Protiva wanted to know who was behind the 'Stop City-Funded Internet' campaign that was pouring a fortune into scuttling the plan to build a fast, efficient, low-cost city network in his hometown of West Plains, Missouri; after a lot of digging, he discovered that (naturally), the 'collection of fiscally conservative Missourians' who were nominally behind the site was actually the local cable-monopoly, Fidelity Communications, who came clean (but never apologized)." Not shocked. It never got close to a vote, but my own attempt to create one was scuttled by the local tele-co.
"But Texas televangelist Gloria Copeland thinks there’s nothing to worry about. In fact, she says she doesn’t believe there’s such a thing as a flu season." Stupidity can be contagious. "In 2013, her husband Kenneth Copeland, also a televangelist, was criticized when the family’s North Texas megachurch found itself at the center of a measles outbreak."
"The Trump administration is working on new rules that would allow the government to keep immigrants from settling in the US, or even force them to leave, if their families had used a broad swath of local, state, or federal social services to which they’re legally entitled — even enrolling their US-born children in Head Start or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)." The GOP are not Christian leaders because Christians don't do this. The hypocrisy of the right is staggering. This is just hateful and spiteful. (Grokked from John Scalzi)
"An Oklahoma man who harassed and attacked members of a Lebanese family living next door was found guilty Wednesday of first-degree murder, a hate crime and other charges in connection with the 2016 slaying of Khalid Jabara… He called the family 'Mooslems' and 'dirty Lebanese,' the Jabaras said — even though they’re Christians who fled civil war and religious persecution in Lebanon decades ago." Racism doesn't bother with facts. (Grokked from Laura J Mixon)
"For now, it is Mr. Kelly who is in trouble. The president has little tolerance for aides who attract negative media attention that spills onto him, and in recent days Mr. Kelly has drawn a string of unwelcome headlines. He roiled negotiations over immigration legislation by declaring that some immigrants were 'too lazy' to apply for legal status. And he initially defended a deputy accused by two ex-wives of physically abusing them." Remember when John Kelly was supposed to be the "adult" in the room? That was like two weeks ago. I'll also note that it's slowly coming out that Porter's job was secure, even in the face of a lack of security clearance because of a protection order against him and which the White House was well aware of back in November, until the photo of his wife came out. This White House is running out of warm bodies willing to fill seats. (Grokked from Joy Reid)
"As you probably know by now, White House Staff Secretary Rob Porter has resigned after two of his ex-wives publicly accused him of assault and abuse during their marriages. Porter was the primary assistant to chief-of-staff John Kelly, and despite the allegations Kelly reportedly wanted Porter to 'stay and fight.'" (Grokked from Kathryn Cramer)
"In a video released today, leading Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny alleged that a former Trump campaign aide “transmitted” information to the Kremlin. The conduit: Russian aluminum magnate Oleg Deripaska, who is known to be part of Vladimir Putin’s inner circle." It's speculative and assumes a lot of things not on the video, but it shines a light on some of the inner core of Russian oligarchs lives and how they mix politics in their personal lives. (Grokked from Katheryn Cramer)
"For the first time in six years, Democrats are fielding candidates in every legislative race this year. And though a lot can happen between now and the general election, Republicans are quietly preparing to lose Statehouse seats for the first time since 2010." Now do it for every. damn. election. and. every. open. seat. Also Ohio has term limits, you need to be grooming the next wave as well. (Grokked from Laura J Mixon)
