I watch the ripples change their size
But never leave the stream
Of warm impermanence
And so the days float through my eyes
But still the days seem the same
And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They're quite aware of what they're goin' through

Linkee-poo Monday

Max Von Sydow, and so it goes.

"New guidance from the CDC urges travelers, especially the elderly and those with compromised health, to avoid long plane trips 'and especially' cruises — a stark shift in rhetoric from an administration that had previously appeared reluctant to discourage Americans from moving around the globe." On the plus side, real cheap vacation prices this summer.

"Passengers confined to their cabins on the Grand Princess cruise ship off the Northern California coast learned Sunday that their week of limbo induced by a COVID-19 outbreak is set to end, as federal and state officials announced a plan to dock at a commercial cargo port in Oakland."

"Italy’s extended quarantine measures restricting the movement of people in the northern regions have provoked panic among residents and accentuated the country’s north-south divide." Stress doesn't bring out the best of us, it brings out the truth in us.

"Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is one of two members of Congress to announce Sunday night that he is placing himself into voluntary self-quarantine after he interacted briefly with a person who is infected by the novel coronavirus at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Maryland last month." I'll bet they get tested. And here's the thing, how many people have Cruz and Gosar interacted with since CPAC?

"President Donald Trump is dodging responsibility as the coronavirus outbreak morphs into a global pandemic swiftly spreading across America and stock markets tank. He's instead accusing Democrats and the media of inflaming the crisis." Well of course he is.

"President Donald Trump on Monday accused New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo of attempting "political weaponization" of the coronavirus crisis, attacking another Democratic governor who has declared a state of emergency as a result of the outbreak." When people tell the truth, that makes the president look bad. Our president is a small, petty man with lots of insecurities.

"Employees of the University of Washington's UW Medicine system, can now get tested for coronavirus without leaving their cars… The system's medical center in northwest Seattle has turned a hospital garage lot into a drive-through clinic that can test a person every five minutes. They typically get results within a day or so."

"With stock futures looking set to open sharply lower, investors will be watching for key market circuit breakers to kick in and limit or halt the market altogether." As of 11:20am the Dow is down 1,487 points. It's bounced off 24,000, so someone has orders to buy at that point. It remains to be seen how much money they're willing to put in.

"Trading on the New York Stock Exchange was halted temporarily Monday after indexes plunged 7% in reaction to Saudi Arabia's shocking oil-price cut. The financial market chaos comes amid increasing worries that the coronavirus epidemic will plunge the global economy into recession." That was probably a part of that 24,000 bounce.

"Brianna Jaynes wanted help for her addiction to painkillers and heroin. She ended up trapped in a cycle that focused on running up big insurance bills and landing profitable kickbacks — not addressing her drug problem." Because there's money to be made. Healthcare should not be for profit.

"Vladimir Putin just sparked what could end up being one of the ugliest oil price wars in modern history, and American oil and gas companies may be the victims." The fracking industry has gotten better with pricing, but from what I understand is that if oil is below $60 a barrel (and note, there are a lot of different oil prices), they're losing money. Also note this could be a concerted attack on US domestic oil. If OPEC and Russia (Brazil, Western Africa) can keep prices low long enough, that will shut out US domestic oil (except for exploited fields which are reaching their end of production). Drilling companies will sell off equipment, factories that make pipe will shutter. So the startup cost to bring back US oil will increase even higher.

"More than a week after (New Delhi)'s worst religious riots in decades, violence has mostly abated. But hundreds of wounded are languishing in understaffed medical facilities. Corpses are still being discovered in drainage ditches. Victims are still dying in hospitals. The death toll has reached 53."

"Demonstrators belonging to Islamist groups attacked an International Women's Day rally in the Pakistani capital Islamabad on Sunday, hurling rocks, chunks of mud and even their shoes. The demonstrators, who were at a rival rally held by hardline Islamist organizations, were particularly enraged by one slogan the women's day rally adopted: 'mera jism, mera marzi' – 'my body, my choice.'" Funny how that line also triggers conservatives here in the US.

Trigger warnings for domestic abuse. "The ruler of Dubai orchestrated the abductions of two of his children – one from the streets of Cambridge – and subjected his youngest wife to a campaign of “intimidation”, a damning UK family court judgment has found… In findings that risk destabilising diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates, a close Gulf ally of Britain, the actions of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum were described by the judge as behaviour which, on the balance of probabilities, amounted to potentially breaking English and international law." (Grokked from Xopher Halftongue)

"A Dutch judge described as 'almost incomprehensible' the 2014 shooting down of a Malaysian airliner over Ukraine that killed all 298 passengers and crew on board, as the trial of three fugitive Russians and a Ukrainian began on Monday near Amsterdam."

"President Donald Trump and his campaign promoted a dishonestly edited video on Saturday that wrongly made it seem as if Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden had accidentally endorsed Trump… Trump retweeted the dishonestly edited clip late Saturday night, sharing a version tweeted by White House social media director Dan Scavino -- who incorrectly said the video was taken in St. Louis, where Biden spoke earlier on Saturday." The president, your "go-to" source for fake news.

"Tito Vazquez says he still remembers the day three decades ago when, as a wrestler at Ohio State University, the doctor he'd gone to see about a bloody nose insisted on examining his genitals. He also recalls how one of his coaches dismissed his immediate complaint… That coach, Vazquez says, was Jim Jordan, now an Ohio congressman and an influential voice in Republican politics, perhaps best known for his pugnacious defense of President Donald Trump during the recent impeachment proceedings." Jim Jordan was legally responsible to report this either upward or to law enforcement. He did neither. Despite numerous first hand reports of people saying they told Jordan about the abuse, some saying he joked about it, he now says he didn't know anything. Either he's lying, or he was just as incompetent a coach as he is a congressman. Jimmy's gotta go. (Grokked from Chuck Wendig)
