I watch the ripples change their size
But never leave the stream
Of warm impermanence
And so the days float through my eyes
But still the days seem the same
And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They're quite aware of what they're goin' through

Linkee-poo Monday Nov 9

Alex Trebek, and so it goes.

"Tropical Storm Eta is tracking near South Florida, where heavy rainfall, strong winds, storm surge and high surf are expected to continue on Monday… Eta made landfall in the Florida Keys at Lower Matecumbe Key on Sunday night at 11 p.m. EST. This is the 12th named storm to make landfall in the U.S. this hurricane season, and the first for the state of Florida."

"But how much do most customers know about what really goes on behind the scenes in our local supermarkets — now or before the pandemic? What's gained and lost as all that food makes its way to the shelves?"

"A powerful coalition of the UK’s health professions has called for a climate tax to be imposed on food with a heavy environmental impact by 2025, unless the industry takes voluntary action on the impact of their products… The group says the climate crisis cannot be solved without action to cut the consumption of food that causes high emissions, such as red meat and dairy products. But it says that more sustainable diets are also healthier and would reduce illness." Or, ya know, we could target the 7 companies that produce 80+% of the world's carbon footprint.

"Pfizer said Monday that early results from its coronavirus vaccine suggest the shots may be a surprisingly robust 90% effective at preventing COVID-19, putting the company on track to apply later this month for emergency-use approval from the Food and Drug Administration." That's good news if it proves to be true. Also note the precautions in the article that this is preliminary data (not even at the point that it's ready for peer review) and that it's highly unusual to release such information so early in the process.

"Utah’s governor declared a new state of emergency late Sunday after the state’s most devastating week of the pandemic, as COVID-19 infections skyrocketed and deaths hit new highs. His big concern is the surge in hospitalizations that may soon overwhelm doctors and nurses."

"In the spring, U.S. medical workers were heralded as heroes. But by the fall, the rhetoric had started to shift, with the public growing increasingly fatigued by the coronavirus pandemic and President Donald Trump accusing doctors of inflating Covid-19 death counts for money… With the death toll from the coronavirus continuing to tick up, many medical workers say they hoped for a landslide victory for Democratic nominee Joe Biden, who has said he’ll follow the advice of scientists if he wins the presidency."

"The day President Donald Trump turns the White House over to Joe Biden, COVID-19 will remain just as big a threat to Americans. But the strategy for tackling it will change dramatically… Public health experts expect a major reset, including a renewed emphasis on science, better communication and efforts to simultaneously boost the economy and public health rather than pitting the two against each other."

Meanwhile, on Bullshit Mountain… "Over the past eight months, CNN has become the go-to network for alarmist coverage of the coronavirus outbreak, but the anti-Trump channel sang a different tune on Saturday as thousands gathered in cities across the country to celebrate Joe Biden's election victory… However, the network's concerns about the possible spread of the virus were virtually non-existent Saturday… 'People have just gone out to the streets. People are just so excited, so happy right now,' CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer said in response to images of gatherings in cities like Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City. 'They're wearing masks. They're not [doing] much social distancing, but they are at least wearing masks.'" They just don't get it. They're so wrapped into their world view, they can't see reality.

"Several evangelical and Christian church leaders, including televangelist Pat Robertson, White House spiritual adviser Paula White and First Baptist Church Pastor Robert Jeffress, all made bold predictions about a sweeping Trump victory in the presidential election. Those hopes were dashed Saturday as nearly every major news outlet declared Biden the winner, prompting a scrambled effort among many so-called "prophets" to explain their glaring error in interpreting God… All of the self-proclaimed Christian leaders who prophesied Trump's win reiterated that their incorrect message doesn't mean they are 'false prophets,' urging their followers to 'keep trust in the prophets.'" You can read that as "keep sending us your money" because that's exactly what they mean. But hey, pre-millennial dispensationalists, keep heart. Because the Bible talks about the end-time being preceded by an influx of false prophets.

"Stacey Abrams, winning praise this week for organizing that may help turn Georgia blue, said Sunday that Democrats face a tough but winnable battle to flip two Senate seats in a runoff early next year."

"McConnell, the Senate Republican leader who was reelected in Kentucky to a seventh term last week, is poised to hold the key to Biden's legislative agenda no matter what happens in two likely runoff elections in Georgia in January that will determine the party that controls the chamber."

"Reactions to Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 election poured in Saturday from world leaders expressing everything from congratulations for the president-elect to relief at President Trump's defeat." The people of the world believe in the dream of America, sometime more than the people who live here.

"And then an urgent question will crystallise: can Biden and Harris put America back together? Can they end an era of hyper-polarisation and economic inequality that has degraded democracy and turned Americans against each other; that has shredded the idea of America?"

There are calls for Democrats to embrace their Republican friends now that Trump has been defeated. You know, for "national unity." About that… "An Arkansas police chief who posted calls for violence against Democrats on social media resigned from his job on Saturday… 'Death to all Marxist Democrats,' Holland posted on Parler, a new social media site popular with conservatives and used as an alternative to Twitter. 'Take no prisoners leave no survivors!!'… One image he shared depicted a group of Democrats, including Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, wearing prison jumpsuits. Under the image he wrote: 'I pray all those in that picture hang on the gallows and are drawn and quartered!!!! Anything less is not acceptable.'" Fuck them.

"Even though all the major news networks, including Fox News, called the race for former Vice President Joe Biden, Saturday was the only the beginning of a long road to convincing a sizable portion of the American public who won the presidency… President Trump has spent much of his four years in power amplifying false claims about election fraud, which has eaten into the confidence many Republicans have in the voting process."

"The General Services Administration is tasked with formally recognizing Biden as president-elect, which begins the transition. But the agency’s Trump-appointed administrator, Emily Murphy, has not started the process and has given no guidance on when she will do so." Breaking government.

"You see, I believe in the possibility of this country… We're always looking ahead… Ahead to an America that's freer and more just… Ahead to an America that creates jobs with dignity and respect… Ahead to an America that cures disease — like cancer and Alzheimers… Ahead to an America that never leaves anyone behind… Ahead to an America that never gives up, never gives in… This is a great nation… And we are a good people… This is the United States of America… And there has never been anything we haven't been able to do when we've done it together."

"Once again, TikTok users are attempting to troll President Donald Trump by calling into a hotline for voter fraud started by his campaign, and making false, and often silly, reports to clog the lines."

"President Donald Trump’s legal team gathered Saturday morning in Philadelphia to hold a press conference, at which they shared conspiracy theories about why Trump lost the 2020 election. The fact that the president’s lawyers are working to find ways to overturn the election results is notable, but perhaps even more so is where they chose to hold their conference: Four Seasons Total Landscaping." Uh huh, they totally intended it to be at a landscaping company.

"The first person Rudy Giuliani, the attorney for President Donald Trump, called up as a witness to baseless allegations of vote counting shenanigans in Philadelphia during a press conference last week is a sex offender who for years has been a perennial candidate in New Jersey."

"President Donald Trump's inner circle is beginning to split over his ongoing refusal to accept the results of the 2020 election, as Jared Kushner and first lady Melania Trump advised him to come to terms with President-elect Joe Biden's victory and his adult sons pressed him and allies to keep fighting."
