Debra Doyle, The Amazing Randi, and Sean Connery, and so it goes.
"Eta is the 28th named storm of the active 2020 hurricane season and ties the record for the number of named storms in a single season set back in 2005."
"Almost a million people have been evacuated from their homes in the Philippines as Typhoon Goni, the most powerful storm this year, approaches… Torrential rain and 215kph (133mph) winds are expected to hit the main island of Luzon on Sunday, passing over the capital Manila."
"Rescue teams in the Turkish port city of Izmir are continuing to search for survivors of Friday's powerful earthquake, as officials say the death toll has increased to at least 64."
"NBC News spoke with 27 current and former USFS firefighters with similar stories. Nearly all of them said they are grossly underpaid to perform life-threatening work. Many don’t have access to health care and other benefits, particularly during the off-season. They are not even considered to be firefighters, instead falling into a bureaucratic quagmire that designates them as forestry technicians. Some grimly joke that only in death does the agency recognize them as bona fide firefighters."
"The sweet pan de muerto bread is one of many offerings that Saenz places on her community altar every year, but the pandemic has brought a new meaning to the sacred experience… 'It's very easy to get lost in that sorrow and grief,' Saenz said. 'This will be an opportunity for us to find some healing.'"
"The U.S. reported 99,321 new Covid-19 cases on Friday, beating its previous record set only a day prior, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University." Welcome to the mathematics of "logarithmic" growth.
"A long-feared surge in COVID-19 cases is underway in the U.S. and abroad, leading to a new round of virus-related rules in some areas, restrictions that have quickly met pushback."
"Covid is spreading 'significantly' faster through England than even the government's predicted 'worst-case' scenario, documents reveal… The Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) says there are around four times as many people catching Covid than anticipated." It's leading to the year without a Santa Claus.
"Boris Johnson was accused of 'giving in to scientific advisers' by a former leader of his Conservative Party after the UK Prime Minister announced a lockdown for England following weeks of warnings from the experts… His Saturday announcement of a strict national lockdown against the spread of coronavirus came after UK cases passed one million and its death toll reached 46,555." There is so much to unpack in that phrase I could devote 2000 words to it.
"In the study, 20% of the 104 grocery workers tested at a store in Boston in May had positive nasal swab tests… This was a significantly higher rate of infection than what was seen in the surrounding communities, the researchers said. Workers who dealt with customers were five times as likely to test positive for Covid-19 as colleagues in other positions… But three out of four of those who tested positive had no symptoms."
"Donald Trump Jr. claims COVID-19 deaths at ‘almost nothing’ as U.S. reports 1,000 new deaths." Rated "pants on fire."
"The White House is strongly pushing back on a new interview in which Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's leading infectious disease expert, said the U.S. is in a terrible position to face the upcoming months of the pandemic."
"These 10 charts show how the economy performed under Trump versus prior presidents."
"Yes, it’s that time in a stock-market pullback when the question turns to whether enough concern has surfaced to displace complacency… Year-end rallies into the winter happen more often than not, but they tend to be born in a fearful fall when investors start to doubt a fourth-quarter flourish will happen."
"That dissection is now a reality across much of the US border. It is a landscape increasingly defined by walls, roads, fences and associated border infrastructure that is fragmenting critically protected habitats, desecrating sacred cultural sites and threatening numerous endangered species in some of the most biodiverse and unique places in North America."
"Amid intensifying rhetoric and fresh attacks by outsiders, including the killings of three people Thursday at a Catholic church in Nice, Muslims in France have kept their heads down and chins up. But deep down, some are squirming, feeling they are being held responsible."
"An American citizen abducted last week in Niger has been rescued during a high-risk U.S. military raid in neighboring Nigeria, officials told ABC News early Saturday."
"There is, it turns out, an exception to this weakness of mine, a person I’m only too happy to see Baron Cohen torment. Step forward Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York and the second most awful man in America, who over the weekend continued to push back against his starring role in the new Borat sequel. In a secretly filmed scene from the movie, Giuliani is shown accompanying Borat’s '15-year-old daughter' to a hotel room, before lying down on the bed and sticking his hands down the front of his pants. He said later he had been 'tucking in my shirt'."
"The past few decades have been a time of deep partisan animosity. On this week’s On The Media, how we might move beyond the current polarization. Plus, how one man’s obsession with organizing the natural world led him down a dark path."
"President Donald Trump teased Fox News host Laura Ingraham for wearing a mask as she attended his campaign rally in Michigan on Friday… He continued, 'I can’t recognize you. Is that a mask? No way, are you wearing a mask? I’ve never seen her in a mask. Look at you. Laura, she’s being very politically correct. Whoa!'" Fuck this president.
"A second-term Trump administration is considering expelling Cabinet members who have crossed the president, refused to mount investigations he has demanded or contradicted him on coronavirus." So, business as usual.
"But the Wall Street Journal and Fox News — among the only news organizations that have been given access to key documents — found that the emails and other records don’t make that case. Leaving aside the many questions about their provenance, the materials offered no evidence that Joe Biden played any role in his son’s dealings in China, let alone profited from them, both news organizations concluded."
They're still fucking with the mail. "Just days before the Nov. 3 election, mail delivery is being delayed at times in a critical Florida district, South Florida’s letter carrier union chief said Friday — and extraordinary measures are being considered to alleviate the bottleneck… Mail that should already have been delivered has been piling up at the Princeton post office in South Miami-Dade County near Homestead, according to Mark Travers, South Florida president for the National Association of Letter Carriers. Travers said he first learned of the backup more than a week ago, on Wednesday, Oct. 21. He raised the matter in a call that Friday with other Florida mail officials, who said they would address the issue."
"North Carolina police pepper sprayed and arrested attendees at a get-out-the vote rally because participants blocked the roadway without authorization, authorities said on Saturday… The 'I Am Change' march to the polls was organized by the Reverend Greg Drumwright and began as a march from a local church to the courthouse. Drumwright said the group was permitted to stand in the square outside the Alamance county courthouse and was escorted through the streets by the police. He also said that the group had “no intention” of having the rally in the street." Also note the statement of the police that they released the pepper spray toward the ground and not anybody compared to the picture of the event at the top of the article.
"For months, Republicans have pushed largely unsuccessfully to limit new avenues for voting in the midst of the pandemic. But with next week’s election rapidly approaching, they have shifted their legal strategy in recent days to focus on tactics aimed at challenging ballots one by one, in some cases seeking to discard votes already cast during a swell of early voting." Cheating their way to victory.
