I watch the ripples change their size
But never leave the stream
Of warm impermanence
And so the days float through my eyes
But still the days seem the same
And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They're quite aware of what they're goin' through

Linkee-poo is laughing in the grasses and the graves

Some lyric sites have that as "grasses and the graze." Which makes me wonder, doesn't anyone know what a churchyard is anymore?

Happy aphelion day. (more on that irony later in the post)

When I saw our local library's geek the library display I'll admit, I had a geekgasm. And yes, I do have the bookmarks and stickers. Librarians rock!

Catherine Schaff-Stump starts to share what she learned at Taos Toolbox.

A little on the worth of a writer having a day job. Or, as John Scalzi puts it, go out and have a life and then tell us about it. And another quote, as Stephen King tells us in "On Writing" people love to read about people working, we don't know why. (Grokked from Dr. Phil)

Colleen Lindsay with some tips about finding and joining writers communities. Having not been able to get to my own local community for the past two years has been killing me.

The LHC and the Higgs Boson explained in animation. And as you get to the end of that animation, when they talk about "strange pink elephants", just know that the LHC isn't running at full power. Yet. (Grokked from Elizabeth Bear)

That life-sized Hot Wheels Double Dare Loop. Um, guys, it's just a game. Do you think they look at passengers in their regular cars and say, "Buckle up, I wanna try something. I saw it in a cartoon but I think I can do it." (Grokked from Tor.com)

Gee, I'm so glad we don't have anything as horrible as debtor's prison. That's an article about the privatization of the prison system and the impositions of fines on those incarcerated.

In the San Diego Fourth's celebrations a "technical malfunction" launches all the fireworks at once. So, an 18 minute show compressed into 15 seconds. (Pointed to by John)

Just what did GlaxoSmithKline do to warrant the US$3B penalties. We'll there is a quick guide. Full disclose, one of the reasons my doctor prescribed Wellbutrin is that it doesn't stimulater appetite, supposedly. I guess I'll need to have that discussion with him the next time I'm in the office. (Grokked from Tobias Buckell)

Building an organ on a chip. Wyss Institute develops structures to grow cells that will mimic organ functions. In this case to study drug function on actual human cells, instead of going through animal studies. While I still want my jetpack, is there any doubt we live in the future now. Queue the anti-abortion crowd to talk about how this is horrible and an abomination in 3… 2… 1… (Grokked from Jay Lake)

Speaking of living in the future, "Is all this (bad weather, intense fire season) due to global warming? Hard to say, exactly. However, these conditions are precisely what you would expect as the Earth warms: weather patterns change, temperature records get broken, conditions go from normally wet to dry, normally dry to wet." I think what he's saying is, no because weather is immediate and climate is long term trends. But this Spring and Summer's weather looks exactly like what we would expect with a warmer climate. (Grokked from Jay Lake)

Alligator Quotient: The Reptilian-American obviously doesn't celebrate the 4th.

"Grasses and the graves"--you may know this already--is the official lyric per the 1995 CD remaster/reissue.

Does anyone know what a CD booklet is anymore? Will they in another five years? Raise your hand if you remember gatefold sleeves. (If you raised your hand, congratulations: you're old. If you didn't raise your hand, sorry: you really missed out on some really awesome album art.)

Hey Eric, the CD is buried somewhere in a box in some closet, so I couldn't check the liner notes. But it's the words, I've always known those as the words. So when I did a lyric check the other day, while listening, I was, "Gaze? Graze? WTF is graze?" (Like, "Brain and brain. What is Brain?")

Okay, now, if you can explain the difference between gold master, steel master, and remember when records were mono and not hi-fi, then we've got something.

I'd have to confess that for a number of years--when the only version of "Cirrus Minor" I had was a cassette of Relics followed by an Australian bootleg* (it took me a long time to actually getting around to owning a copy of More itself), I think I probably thought it was "graze", myself. Gilmour kinda slurs the line and they probably recorded the thing on four-track with almost more layers than that technology really allowed for. (Even on the official CD release of Relics and the remastered More, it's a little slurry.

*For some fool reason, the Floyd never got around to doing an official Relics on CD until the mid-to-late '90s. So I ended up buying a bootleg version that, on the downside, had a botched rip of "Interstellar Overdrive", on the upside had a dozen "bonus tracks" pulled from the Zabriskie Point soundtrack and a bunch of other rarities. Net score!

And now I'm in even more awe and jealousy of your album collection.
