I watch the ripples change their size
But never leave the stream
Of warm impermanence
And so the days float through my eyes
But still the days seem the same
And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They're quite aware of what they're goin' through

Strange Horizons Fund Raising

A public service brought to you by Story Bones.

Strange Horizons, one of the few online paying markets that qualify for SFWA membership (and, disclaimer here, one of the markets I submit to, why they have one of my stories right now), is running a fund raiser. For the donation, you not only keep a good thing going (hey, online paying market! And pro-rates! Woohoo!) you can win fabulous prizes.

Prizes! Paying markets! Free, good SF/F/H for the masses! Shoes for industry!

Well, maybe not that last one.

I read a fair amount of Ellison, Herbert, Heinlein while in college but incredibly one summer I actually spent a solid week including 3 meals a day with Ellison. He was a guest lecturer to the SciFi writers workshop on campus at MSU. We hit if off and frankly the dude was a real trip. Never shut up....and that was great. The stories that guy could spin about Writing, Directing and making movies and television shows...astonishing! Anyway, one steamy hot night we filled a classroom with about 800 students while he read 4 different works from one of his anthology series. He had us in a complete state of suspended animation despite the miserable heat that seemed to build with each page and the oxygen that seemed to dissipate in perspiring angst each minute that passed. It was a great night......I'll never forget the rush of cool midnight summer air that hit my face when we opened the door to walk home. Ellison is insane but his skills allow the insanity to be shared.

Sounds like it was a great time, dmarque. I haven't met Harlan in person, yet, but was involved in the discussion over on Scalzi's Whatever when he showed up. I ended up sending him a source where he could get Pure Maple Syrup (the real stuff from trees). Harlan grew up local to Cleveland and kind of missed the good stuff. I hope he enjoyed it. Two other friends have had personal contact with him (one met in during a speech he gave, shook his hand and talked with him for a bit, the other collects books and ran into some from his personal library).
