Rick, it was a fragment from a fragment of a short story of the Spanish American War, Battle of Manilla Bay with whale zeppelins, improved ironclads, side-wheel steamers, cannon, and sea-monsters. I didn't get to finish it, but I love the visuals of the Olympia (a ship I've actually been on) steaming in past the port forts (I believe there were six installations around the bay), brass and steel cannon and the new ships' guns thundering, while above whale-zeppelin pilots deliver marines for a ground assault through smoke and primitive flak canisters, and in the waters the "tamed" sea-monsters attack the US flotilla at the direction of Spanish Singers on shore.
Now that's a painting I would buy.
I'm not sure I'm going to finish that story as I didn't find much there there (except for the eye candy). But I've been thinking about a certain editor looking for sea stories and pondering a Steam-punk/Cthulhu/Weird mash-up plot line. I think I want to get this book out first, but my writer's mind often has other ideas than the high thought processes part and the short story may pop out before.
