To paraphrase a line from the story (and Pancho Villa's recruitment poster), for the Accummulation of Ideas and the Deadlines, but mostly for the Deadlines.
Jeff VanderMeer's Pirate Anthology is only open until Feb 28. And I'm pretty sure I'm going to miss John Joseph Adams' (aka The Slush God) reading period for a special issue of Shimmer. Plus, my next writers group meets on the 11th, stories for critique should be submitted a week in advance.
So there's a blunderbus to me head, and a cutlass at me backsides. Arrr. (No, my characters don't really talk that way).

A question about the process on your Pirates story. I probably missed some lead up info so forgive my ignorance.
What was driving you to get it done now? An accumulation of ideas (or little notes) that reached critical mass? Something else?
Just curious. I figure the reasons are different for each project, but wanted to ask this story while the subject was fresh on the blog.

Pirates are getting some good play right now.
Yup, pirates are hot. Johnny Depp has done great things for a sub-sub-genre.
