"Do you ever feel like the universe is looking in the opposite direction?" he asked, and passed the mustard to his dinner companion.

She didn't notice, staring out the window as she was at the waiter who had run after the dog which had stolen the steak that had slithered to the floor on its way to their table.

The mustard pot fell, clunked really, onto the white damask cloth. Dollops of acidic yellow rained out; a miniature and edible volcano erupting from ceramic painted with tiny violets.

"Pardon?" She turned to him and smiled, her head tilted slightly to the left, her antennae cocked in the direction of his expensive Italian necktie.

"The universe," he told her. "Looking in the other—"

"—Ah yes, direction. I see what you mean." She nodded, and reached one of her hands out to pat the back of his where it grasped his knife. The other she surreptitiously scraped through the spilt mustard droplet on her lap, and when she thought he wasn't looking, she lifted that finger to her mouth and inserted it between her parted lips, and sucked.
